She became famous for her part in the Battle of the River Plate as part of G Squadron along with HMS Ajax. In 1941 HMS Achilles joined the newly formed Royal New Zealand Navy and continued to serve actively in WWII. Post-war she was sold to the Indian Navy in 1948 where she was renamed INS Delhi and notably the ship played herself as HMS Achilles in the 1956 movie "The Battle of the River Plate".
