We are glad to Combine Multiple Items to Save Shipping Description: It is an original antique copper engraved map on paper over 305 years old from Bowen & Owens' Britannia Depicta or Ogilby Improv'd, published by Thomas Bowles, London, 1720. John Ogilby's original Britannia was published in 1675, which was an atlas of strip maps of the major roads of Britain. Although there were a few earlier strip maps of major roads, Ogilby's work was monumental in scale and incorporated the previously invented surveyors wheel to extensively measure all the major roads of England and Wales for the first time. Later in 1720, Emanuel Bowen and John Owens , published an improved version based on the strip maps of Ogilby. It was smaller and handier for travelers, and was augmented with a copious amount of historical and heraldic details. This particular map is from the Bowen & Owens 1720 atlas, a copy of the title page is included. Overall, a nice early antique road map, that is being sold as a single loose sheet with two map printed back to back, so if framing one would have to choose a side, see the pics for more detail. Size: It is a small map with the entire page measuring 5 1/2 by 7 3/4 inches (14x20cm) Condition: It is in Good to Very Good condition for its age, printed on a heavy cotton page with typical striations when held to the light and embossed plate marks around the margins, on reverse. There is light tonal ageing and minor browning along the edges, otherwise fairly clean and well preserved. Overall, a nice early example of an English road map that would frame up well. Two maps printed back to back on one sheet, see the pics. The pics are of the actual map.
