&c. Nuremberg: Homann Heirs 1786 Large engraved map, 38¼ × 30½ in. (97 × 77.5 cm); dissected into panels and mounted on original red cloth, preserved in the original marbled-paper slipcase. Original outline hand-color. A monumental postal-route map of Germany and neighboring regions, delineating the intricate network of Imperial and regional post roads, relay stations, and intercity mileages extending from the Netherlands and France to Bohemia, Austria, and Poland. Issued by the famed Homann Heirs of Nuremberg, this 1786 edition—engraved with French and German titles—was the final great postal map of the Holy Roman Empire, dedicated to Prince Carl Anselm von Thurn und Taxis (1733–1805), hereditary Postmaster General of the Empire. The decorative rococo cartouche, flanked by postal emblems and the Thurn-und-Taxis arms, proclaims the work’s official character, while the dual imprints (French privilege line at top, German title at lower left) underscore its intended circulation throughout the multilingual territories of the Empire. Both a masterpiece of Enlightenment geography and a document of Europe’s premodern communications system. Ink inscription on reverse of cloth backing: “B. Shoemaker’s / – 1806 –.” Early American ownership, almost certainly a member of the Shoemaker family of southeastern Pennsylvania—descendants of Philadelphia merchant-mayor Benjamin Shoemaker (1704–1767)—whose Quaker and Pennsylvania-German branches settled in Chester County. A superb and complete example of the 1786 Thurn-und-Taxis postal map, engraved with bilingual titling and the rare upper-border “Privilège de S.M.J.” imprint. Retaining its original red-cloth mount and marbled-paper slipcase and bearing early Chester County, Pennsylvania provenance, this copy represents a museum-quality survival of one of the most important European postal maps of the eighteenth century. Some slight rubbing and wear, some discoloration to cloth, rubbing and wear to case, else in very good + condition. The very best seller I have encountered on eBay! I plan to do business with Westchester Books again, if they will accept my business. Sadly, I had to return the books I purchased from them, through no fault of theirs. They were patient, responsive, and understanding. If you could choose only one book seller on eBay, Westchester Books is the one you should choose. 5 STARS ALL THE WAY!! Great seller! Fast shipping. Excellent packaging. Great value. I plan to buy again from this seller.
