1826 American Bible Society Holy Bible Original Tongues Leather Family. Item description: Antique 1826 Holy Bible printed for the American Bible Society in New York, in its original full leather binding. This early 19th century family Bible contains the Old and New Testaments “translated out of the original tongues” and “stereotyped for the American Bible Society by D. & G. Bruce,” with imprint line “Printed by A. Paul, 72 Nassau-Street, New-York, 1826” on the title page. The front flyleaf carries early ink ownership/family birth entries for members of the Davis family dated 1824, 1828 and 1832, giving it nice genealogical interest. The leather boards are well worn with rubbing, scuffing, darkening and edge wear, and there is some loss and splitting at the spine ends and corners, consistent with a Bible that has been handled and read for nearly 200 years. The text block remains complete and attached but feels delicate at the hinges and should be handled with care. Interior pages are tanned with age toning, scattered foxing, staining and soiling, small edge chips and dog-ears, and an overall “attic find” look. I did not see any missing sections or large tears while flipping through, but there may be minor flaws typical of a book of this age. This is a solid, unrestored example of an early American Bible Society printing, ideal for Bible collectors, early American religious history enthusiasts, or anyone interested in preserving an original 1820s family Bible with recorded births.
