Direct contacts occur because electrons and protons have frequencies; they vibrate! Evidence indicates that the mass of an electron (and similarly for a proton) flies out and back in a cycle of length equal to the inverse of the particle's frequency. In this very brief time, it goes out in space and time so that its velocity is mostly equal to the speed of light in a vacuum, although near the end of its trajectory it eventually slows to a stop, then returns to its particle. Like a yo-yo, the mass leaves behind it an infinitesimal trail of mass, so that the moving tip contains less and less mass, and stops when it runs out of mass. It regains the mass in the trail as it returns to its particle. On its outward journey, this mass may come close enough to another particle to establish a very brief connection, during which energy may be exchanged between the two particles. Also, during that journey, the mass may come close enough to another outward bound mass to form a connection, during which energy may be exchanged. From this structure, the book shows how to explain each of the three forces of physics (gravity, electromagnetism, and the strong nuclear force). It also shows that the measurements which seemed to indicate that the universe is expanding were misinterpreted. Thus the universe is actually stable; it is not expanding. It also shows the correct reason for the precession of the perihelia of the objects orbiting the Sun. It is not general relativity. It is that sufficient mass (as in the Sun) blocks gravity. Hence the apparent center of mass of the Sun is offset from the true center of mass by about 4,375 meters.
