This auction is for a "Shoji Red" Japanese Maple tree. It was grown from seed collected from a red-leaf Japanese Maple tree growing in a Japanese garden. Last year's seedling. Like a lot of the red leaf varieties, this one changes color throughout the growing season. It came in all red, then turned mostly green, then green with red leaf edges, now it's coming in bright red again. Seed grown Japanese Maples can closely resemble the parent tree or they can differ considerably, depending on the genotype (genetic makeup) of the seed. Each tree is a potential new variety that can be propagated by cloning or grafting. You never know what kind of phenotypes (general characteristics like morphology, leaf shape, growth rate, etc.) you'll get when growing from seed, but you can be sure they will be awesome!
