Acer palmatum 'Beni ukigumo' SUPER RARE Variegated Japanese Maple READ DESCRIPTO. This is a red form of the popular floating cloud maple ‘Ukigumo’. Usually by the third or forth leaf set on the first push, you will begin to see the fine speckled and web-like variegation of pink and cream over the base red color of the leaves. WINNING BIDS FROM THOSE STATES WILL BE CANCELED, NO EXCEPTIONS Acer palmatum ‘Beni ukigumo’ is an extremely rare and beautiful new variety of variegated Japanese Maple. The name translates to mean “Red Floating Clouds” in Japanese. This is a red form of the popular floating cloud maple ‘Ukigumo’. The leaves on this tree emerge in the spring a solid dark purple red color. Usually by the third or forth leaf set on the first push, you will begin to see the fine speckled and web-like variegation of pink and cream over the base red color of the leaves. Overall, the leaves can be completely pink with red and green speckles, or be wild blends of cream, red, green and pink. We have not seen any reversions, but some younger trees might push solid red leaves during their early first flush. Most of the tree for sale IS solid red/green, this will eventually show variegation. The variegation becomes more intense by late spring and summer. The tree for sale has been growing in a shaded greenhouse, so the base color appears more green/red than red. The red color will return once the tree is grown in sun/partial shade. We’ve observed the best variegation on older trees. Based on our observations, this tree puts on about 6-8” a year, once established. It should eventually become a small tree that is about 5-6’ tall and 3-4’ wide in 10 years.. Zones 5b-8. You are bidding on the actual tree that appears in the 3th-9th photographs. The approximate height of this tree is 14" (inches) and the width is 15” (inches). This tree is just leafing out for the spring! This tree has been growing in a shaded greenhouse, so some of the red is subdued and appears more green. Many of the leaves are solid red or green, but the newest flush is beginning to show the white and pink marble/speckle variegation.
