Acer palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa' Dwarf Japanese Maple 1gal READ DESCRIPTION. Acer palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is one of the most desirable dwarf Japanese Maples. The rather large leaves grow very close to one another, appearing like shingles on a roof. This is due to the very short inter-nodes between buds along the branches. Acer palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is one of the most desirable dwarf Japanese Maples. The rather large leaves grow very close to one another, appearing like shingles on a roof. This is due to the very short inter-nodes between buds along the branches. The natural habit of 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is upright, with spiraling branches and trunk. It appears like a natural bonsai, without training. A final point of interest is the spring flush colors. The leaves on this cultivar are a fresh grass green color, but in the spring when the buds are opening, red colored bud shields appear which give way to the new green leaves.
