Description
RAF DUNHOLME LODGE – A HISTORY. By Stewart Scott. 126pp card-cover privately published A4-size book by this local Lincolnshire author. Read the fascinating history of this WW2 airfield which was first used by Hampden bombers from nearby RAF Scampton as they dispersed in the fields around Dunholme Lodge Farm. After a brief spell of use by No.1485 Target Tow & Gunnery Flight, runways were laid and 44 (Rhodesia) Sqn arrived from RAF Waddington. With, variously, 49, 170 and 619 Sqdns also operating from Dunholme Lodge, the airfield ceased bomber operations at the end of 1944. However, a few brief months of a most interesting nature followed when General Aircraft Ltd took up residence on part of the airfield to conduct trials with gliders. A Polish Air Force Resettlement Centre, Bloodhound Missile Site, along with motor cycle and car racing (with some of the 'names' of the day competing), pedal cycle racing and autocross events all added to the rich history of RAF Dunholme Lodge. All this and more is covered in this comprehensive account. NB! The listing price is 'at cost' (to include postage).
