Description

Rare 1896 Lee Literary Society Gold Oratory Medal Named to John Lloyd Phillips – Virginia Agricultural & Mechanical College Offered is a rare late-19th-century Lee Literary Society presentation medal dated June 1896, awarded for “Merit – Best Orator.” The medal bears the Latin motto: VIRTUS SUOS CORONAT (“Virtue crowns her own”) and the reverse is engraved: “Awarded to J. Lloyd Phillips.” The Lee Literary Society was one of the principal student literary and debating societies at the Virginia Agricultural & Mechanical College (later Virginia Polytechnic Institute, now Virginia Tech). These societies held formal competitions in debate and oratory, awarding medals to the best speakers during annual celebrations. ⸻ Hand Engraved Craftsmanship One of the most striking features of this medal is the craftsmanship. The entire design and lettering are masterfully hand engraved, including: • the decorative cross design • all lettering on the face • the Latin motto banner • the inscription on the reverse The engraving shows the confident line variation and depth characteristic of late-19th-century professional engraving, with crisp lettering and finely cut ornamental detail. Unlike later stamped medals, this piece was individually engraved by hand, making each example unique. ⸻ Identified Recipient Research assistance from Virginia Tech Special Collections and University Archives identifies the recipient as: John Lloyd Phillips (Class of 1900) Phillips later became an important figure in Virginia agricultural science: • Instructor in Entomology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (1899–1901) • Assistant State Entomologist (1901–1903) • State Entomologist and Pathologist (1903–1906) • State Entomologist (1906–1910) Virginia Tech archivists also located a contemporary 1896 Virginia newspaper mention confirming Phillips received the Lee Literary Society oratory award. ⸻ Gold Content Weight: approximately 12 grams The medal has been twice independently scratch-tested using acid and confirmed to be at least 10 karat gold. The alloy shows a warm reddish tone typical of late-19th-century American gold alloys, suggesting the purity may fall between 10K and 12k, though does not hold up to 14 karat testing and no destructive testing has been performed. Again, please note: the alloy shows a warm reddish tone similar to what we know of today as a rosy/coppery colored gold. For some reason it appears as more yellow in the photos than in person. Condition: Very good antique condition. • Crisp engraving • Strong detail throughout • Light age wear consistent with use • Original period pin assembly intact No repairs observed. Please review photographs for details. ⸻ Historical Significance The Lee Literary Society played a central role in the intellectual life of Virginia Agricultural & Mechanical College during the late 19th century. Literary societies were the primary forums for public speaking, debate, and rhetoric, training many future lawyers, professors, and public officials. This medal represents an award given for excellence in oratory during that era. Its recipient later became Virginia’s State Entomologist, linking the object to the early scientific history of Virginia Tech. *** Virginia Tech Virginia Polytechnic Institute VPI Virginia Agricultural & Mechanical College Lee Literary Society Victorian academic medal Oratory medal Debate medal 19th century university award Gold academic medal Hand engraved medal
