Description

BACKGROUND: Shirvan is a district in modern day Azerbaijan that around the turn of the century became a powerhouse of rug production for an increasingly interested European market. As such, many rugs from this time period reflect the many designs seen in different cities and districts of the Caucuses, but were made in workshops in Shirvan. THIS PIECE: c. 1900 This rug is an excellent example of the conglomeration of motifs that would have been the result of weavers in Shirvan borrowing from different areas of the Caucuses. E.G. the five Lezgi stars, different versions of the endless knot, the use of animals, the hourglass borders, the latchhook...most of the caucuses from Kazak to Dagestan are represented on this piece. This is a slightly unusual size as well. Many rugs from the Caucasus are smaller, giving this one the distinction of being able to be used in larger spaces. There has also been some abrash that has developed, giving the rug an even more storied history. CONDITION: There are areas of wear on the field and there have been at least two professional repairs done in the past. Missing guard border on one fringe end. See pictures for extent of typical wear. Sold as-is
