Description

This finely-carved door once adorned a Dogon granary, serving both to protect and sanctify the life-giving stores of food contained inside. The Dogon people of Mali live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the Bandiagara Escarpment where they cultivate millet sorghum onions and other crops. The Dogon store their millet in tall granaries with window-like openings that are closed by a door like this one. This example features an unusual figure of a relief carved European, or white man, in a Bicorn hat, on a horse. There is a partial profile of another horse facing the horseman. Geometric zig zag border. Black paint with losses. Ca Late 19th, Early 20th C. Possibly older. This Dogon granary door is approximately 15 in. wide and 28.5 in. tall and 2 in. thick. Heavy, weighing in at 10 lbs., 2 oz. It is flat and would hang very nicely as a wall display or be incorporated into a cabinet or other piece of furniture. Condition is good used. Typical wear and losses commensurate with age no use. Please see Photos.
