Nippon porcelain pieces were often hand-painted with elaborate designs for the Western market. The mark on this porcelain object indicates it is an antique piece made in Japan between 1891 and 1921. The word "Nippon" (meaning "Japan") was required on all Japanese imports to the US by the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890. The "M" within a laurel wreath mark seen here is associated with the Morimura Brothers, who later became the Noritake company.
