Description

Original framed Lifetime Membership certificate issued by The First Flight Society of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, made out to famed astronaut Bruce McCandless II. Dated December 17, 1985, the document recognizes McCandless as a member and supporter of the Society and honors the historic achievement of Orville and Wilbur Wright’s first powered flight on December 17, 1903. The certificate features the Society’s distinctive eagle motif with a central early aviation image and is signed by the Society’s president. A desirable and display-ready piece of aviation history from the personal archive of Bruce McCandless II, celebrated for his pioneering Space Shuttle-era EVA work and iconic untethered flight. Presented in a wood frame with matting. Condition: Good overall condition with age-appropriate handling wear. Frame and backing show wear, including visible deterioration to the rear paper backing. Certificate appears clean and well-preserved behind glazing. Not examined outside of the frame. Measurements: Overall framed size: approximately 16 x 19 in. Collector’s Notes: Bruce McCandless II is best remembered for completing the first untethered spacewalk using the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), one of the most iconic images of the Space Shuttle era. While not a NASA-issued document, this certificate reflects McCandless’s personal connection to the broader history of flight and aviation heritage preservation.
