OWL OF WISDOM SMALL STATUE ON IONIC COLUMN The owl was the symbol for Athena, goddess of wisdom and strategy. According to myth, an owl sat on Athena's blind side, so that she could see the whole truth. In Ancient Greece, the owl was a symbol of a higher wisdom, and it was also a guardian of the Acropolis. The Ionic order forms one of the three orders of classical architecture, the other two canonic orders being the Doric and the Corinthian. The Ionic columns are the most thin and small columns out of the three canonic orders.
