General Interest Burma Railway Artist: Artist at War in Singapore, Thailand and Burma, 1942-45 Product Details: Category: Books ISBN: 0850523370 Title: Burma Railway Artist: Artist at War in Singapore, Thailand and Burma, 1942-45 The Fast Free Shipping Author: Chalker, Jack Publisher: Pen & Sword Books Ltd Year Published: 1994 Number of Pages: 136 Book Binding: Hardback Prizes: Book Condition: VERYGOOD SKU: GOR005702569 Item description The British artist Jack Chalker, a gunner in the Royal Artillery, was a Japanese prisoner of war for three and a half years in Singapore and in the Thai-Burma railway camps. From the beginning, he kept microscopic diary notes, sketches and paintings on scraps of paper and material, recording life and conditions in the labour camps. Discovery of such records would have meant death, and Chalker had to go to great lengths to hide his work in bamboo railings, furniture and even wooden legs. The renowned Australian surgeon, "Weary" Dunlop, who provides the introduction to this book, enlisted Chalker's help to record the medical cases in camp and after the surrender. This is the story and pictorial record of the people, places, landscapes and incidents which occurred while Jack Chalker was a prisoner of the Japanese. Amid the horror, misery and death, he always found beauty, and the illustrations include many drawings of local plants and flowers. There was a delay in shipping b/c book was damaged that they wanted to ship & they had to find another one to replace it. So it took 2 weeks to receive. The book received was in the "very good" condition as stated. I've bought from this seller many times and never received a junk book as I have from other seller's. They are thorough when it comes to inspecting books for quality & condition. Their reasonable prices keep me coming back!! Thanks for another great buying experience with you!! 👍👍👍
Strange experience. Listing says book will ship from Florida, but it was sent from the UK and switched to USPS in the US. Hardcover book was packaged terribly in a thin mailer, but surprisingly arrived (mostly) undamaged. There is a small ding, but book was listed as "very good" so that's acceptable - listing showed a stock image and had no description so I took a gamble. Price was very good. I'd buy from this seller again, but I'd be nervous about their shipping practices.
Item arrived as shown on ebay. Sellers communication was very good and consistent.Shipping packaging was not ideal because it was just shipped in a paper envelope so, the outer paper sleave of the booklet may have been damaged - but it was a used item and based on the ebay photos from the seller, the sleave had wear anyway. That said the book and cds are in good condition and I am happy with the purchase. I would buy from this seller again.
