That inscription is under the backing but guarantee it's there. Signed lower right. Painting measures 15" by 19"; framed in period gold carved frame 21.5" by 26.5". Beautiful period painting of the California Pacific Coast at Laguna. I believe the painting dates to the late 1910s to early 1920s. Painting with glass is heavy. Will charge only actual shipping/packaging cost and refund if less. Born in Dayton, Ohio, Harry Allis was a landscape painter in impressionist style and worked in both oil and watercolor. He lived primarily in Michigan and California. He taught at the Detroit Museum Art School, gave private art classes, and was an art critic for the Detroit Free Press . He studied at the Detroit Museum of Art, with Harry Eaton in New York City, and with Bouguereau in Paris. In 1912, he moved to Southern California and lived in Long Beach and Los Angeles, except for the early 1920s when he was in New York. He was active in the local art scene until his death in Los Angeles in 1938. Affiliations included the National Art Club*, the Society of Western Artists, 1896-1914,. Allis also studied with Harry Eaton in New York and with William-Adolphe Bouguereau in Paris. Allis is best known for his impressionist landscapes which were exhibited at the Paris Salon, the Carnegie Institute International Exhibition, the Chicago Art Institute, the St. Louis Exposition, the Cincinnati Museum of Art, the John Herron Art Institute of Indianapolis, and the Detroit Museum of Art.
