Recorded at Andrew Jackson Hall, Tennessee Performing Arts Center, Nashville, in March and June 2001. Chadwick became one of the first American composers whose music consistently reflected a distinctly American wit, energy, and independence. During his career, he helped modernize the New England Conservatory, taught generations of American composers, and broadened professional musical training in the United States. No fewer than three of the concert overtures collected here are named after the Muses — Thalia after the muse of comedy, Melpomene after the muse of tragedy, and Euterpe after the muse of music. Chadwick’s lifelong friendship with artists is also reflected in Aphrodite and Angel of Death, both of which were inspired by works of art.
