Description

This is a modified Schwinn Dash helmet for adults and teens age 14 and up. New and unused. It has a custom extra-wide sun brim that has been added by hand in a laborious, hours-long process. The brim is made of rigid foam (Foamular) similar to the foam used in the helmet itself. It is coated with vinyl tape to protect it from fingerprints and abrasions. Gray webbing runs around the outer edge of the brim to further protect the edge. The brim is glued onto the helmet and cannot be removed or adjusted. The buckle in the back is mainly decorative, though it helps to secure the webbing and has some utility during the assembly process. The helmet and brim are sold fully assembled as one unit. The brim adds about 8 oz. to the weight of the helmet. The helmet and brim are best suited for casual riding at low to moderate speeds with low to moderate winds. Using this helmet and brim in high winds or at high speeds may pose dangers to the user. The brim is mainly designed to protect the face, neck and shoulders from sun. The brim can also help to keep rain and snow off the face. The helmet and brim are designed to be water-proof, but use in water sports or full water immersion is not recommended. Please note that though the Schwinn helmet has been safety tested, the brim has not been safety or crash tested. In some crash scenarios, the brim may offer added protection. However, in other crash scenarios, the brim may increase the risk of injury or death. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! Brim Measures 16.25 x 19.5 x 1 inches, (includes buckle). Brim width is between 3.75 and 4.25 inches (not including buckle). I have been using a helmet and brim similar to this one while riding my bike almost every day for about ten years now. I love it because it shields my face from the sun and I don't have to use so much sunblock, or use sunblock so often. I developed this helmet after trying other brim add-ons made of softer materials. Those tended to flop around in the wind. My design does not flop around. I have worn this type of helmet in winds up to around 40 mph on occasion. It doesn't flop around, but if it is very windy, it can catch the wind and tilt your head for a moment. So if it is really windy, I usually opt for a different helmet. It is especially important to tighten the straps and the size-adjustment knob at the back when using this helmet. One thing I like about the Dash helmet is it has large holes which improves air-flow. I can also run a cable or chain through the holes to lock the helmet to my bike when I am going inside. I have only had one small incident with this type of helmet. I once fell off my bike while it was barely moving. It had nothing to do with the wind. I put my foot down to steady myself on the curb but there was no curb. I just lost my balance. My extra-wide brim smacked the pavement, but it bounced, and neither the brim, the helmet or my head suffered any damage. This is my first time making this design available to the public. If there seems to be strong interest, I may offer more helmets like this one in the future.
