EARL HINES Paris Session 1965 Columbia UK Mono 1st Press -1 SX 6030 I Surrender Earl Hines recorded Paris Session on May 27, 1965, during a European tour that took him through France, Belgium, Great Britain, Denmark, Switzerland, and Italy. The album captures him alone at the keyboard for nearly two hours — ten solo piano performances distilled to the ten tracks presented here. The repertoire spans jazz standards he had lived with for decades: "I Surrender Dear," "I Cover the Waterfront," "Second Balcony Jump," "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "Blue Because of You," "Somebody Loves Me," "Sixty Five Faubourg," "On the Sunny Side of the Street," and "Sweet Sue, Just You." Hines was once called the first modern jazz pianist. Where the stride pianists of the 1920s kept an unwavering left-hand pulse, Hines broke up the rhythm with unexpected accents and suspensions — his right hand playing octaves to cut through ensemble noise, his left hand pulling time in directions no one anticipated without ever losing the beat. The result is playing that sounds simultaneously rooted and unpredictable. His direct influence reached Teddy Wilson, Nat King Cole, and Art Tatum, among many others.
