Joseph Constantine Stadler (fl.1780-1812) was a British painter and aquatint engraver of German origin. He was active in London. He engraved Joseph Farington's drawings for 'History of the River Thames' by William Combe (1794-1796), Robert Bowyer's for Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg's 'Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain' (1801), and worked on many publications for Rudolph Ackermann, including 'Views of London' (1812-22) and 'Public Schools' (1816). In 1787, he exhibited four landscapes at the Royal Academy in London, and in 1822 he engraved the 18 plates for Thomas Rowlandson's 'Sketches from Nature' (1822). John Boydell (January 19, 1720 - December 12, 1804) was a British publisher, engraver and printseller. Although he himself was an engraver, he was better known for his support of other artists and thus was instrumental to the initiation of a British tradition in the printing of perspective views and vues d'optique. His efforts placed Britain ahead of France in the trade of engravings between the two nations. and initiated a British tradition in the art form. He was born the son of a surveyor, and was apprenticed to artist William Henry Toms, from whom he learned engraving. He went into business in 1746, publishing a book of his own engravings. Thereafter he entered the realm of the print dealer, selling the work of other artists, including those produced in France in the 1750s. He unable to establish a reciprocal trade of English prints in France, until he began to commission works of sufficient quality that French printsellers would buy them. By the 1760s the trade balance had shifted, earning him a fellowship in the Royal Society for the achievement. His view of the Death of General Wolfe was particularly successful for him. Also of note were his 1755 A Collection of One Hundred and Two Views, etc. and his Shakespeare Gallery, an illustrated edition of Shakespeare's plays, which featured plates contributed by the most illustrious English painters of the day. Boydell dedicated time to civic works, donated art to institutions, and served in public office, most notably as Lord Mayor of London in 1790. The French Revolutionary Wars ruined his international trade, however, sending him near to bankruptcy by the time of his death. Josiah Boydell (18 January 1752 – 27 March 1817) was a British publisher and painter, whose main achievement was the establishment of the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery with his uncle, John Boydell. Boydell was born in Hawarden, Flintshire, the fourth child of a farmer, Samuel Boydell (1727–1783), and his wife Ann, née Turner (1725–1764). In 1766, at the age of 14, he moved to London to begin his seven-year apprenticeship to Samuel's brother, John Boydell. While an apprentice, he learned painting from Benjamin West and mezzotint engraving from Richard Earlom. After completing his apprenticeship, he continued to work closely with John Boydell, making some engravings himself and drawing scenes for others. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1772 and 1779. One of his major early tasks was to draw the picture collection of Sir Robert Walpole at Houghton Hall, Norfolk, prior to the export of the pictures to Catherine the Great of Russia. Boydell worked on this project with Joseph and George Farington. While in Norfolk, he met and (on 6 December 1774) married Jane North, the daughter of Sir Roger North. Josiah and Jane had several children. One son, John North Boydell, was later involved in the family's publishing company. All of the maps we sell are ORIGINALS.
