First Monument to George Washington near U. S. 40 Boonsboro Maryland. FIRST MONUMENT TO GEORGE WASHINGTON NEAR U. S. 40 BOONSBORO MD. The first Monument erected to the memory of George Washington is located on top of South Mountain. It was built July 4th 1827. The original monument was gradually reduced to a state of near ruins over a period of years. In 1936 it was rebuilt and is now a Maryland State Park. It is reached by a splendid road leading from U. S. 40 just east of Boonsboro. The postcard depicts a stone monument with two flags one American and one Maryland state flag on flagpoles. Trees and a road are visible in the foreground.
