Description
The card, dated January 25, 1892, belongs to Harvey Manger Metzger, a member of the graduating class of 1894 The card is signed by William Mann Irvine, the Physical Instructor. Irvine was a notable figure in 19th-century athletics and education. A graduate of Princeton, he served as a pioneer in physical education at F&M before leaving in 1893 to become the founding headmaster of the prestigious Mercersburg Academy. These cards were part of a late-19th-century trend in "anthropometry"—the scientific study of the measurements and proportions of the human body. Colleges used these metrics to track student fitness and prescribe specific gymnasium exercises to "correct" physical deficiencies.
