And in unprecedented ( & So-Cool ! ) fashion ... this Monster Box Set included Thirty ( 30 ) Grateful Dead Shows on Thirty ( 30 ) CD Sets ( 80-CD's in total ) - and, each CD Set represents the sequential years of the Band's 30-Year development ... from 1966 to 1995 ! Obviously, this was a " Deadheads Dream ! " type Box Set - for the Beyond-Special occasion ... of 50-Years Upon Our Heads ! Fantastic, to say the least ... Wow !!! And, for " This ! " 30 Trips " 1987 " 2-CD Set selection offered here ... Whoa ?!!!!!! A Deadhead Dream ! Come-True !! >>> 9/18/87 M.S.G. !!!!! I mean my-fellow-Fans ! -- This-Show is HOT !!! And, if you aren't already well in the know on this-one - well ... you are now ! " In The Dark " was just-released during the '87 Summer Tour - one the same day as the Pittsburgh Civic Show - on 7/6/87, I believe ? And ... the Dead were just So-Hot ! - and yeah ... especially on the East Coast ! As " seeing the Dead Live ! " was pretty much ... ' the' thing to do - period. Because they were coming ! to all of the major East Coast Hoops Court / Hockey Rink Venues all-along the Mid-Atlantic - wedged somewhere in-between Bon Jovi ! - Poison ! - G & R ! & Motley Crue ! - Ha ! No, but seriously ... as the real-competition was real-real ' thick ' - with U2 - Pink Floyd - Bowie ... being right in there too. With the Good Ol' 1987 ! Grateful Dead coming-in darn close to $27 Million ! - in a solid 4th place !! And ... as far as this East Coast run went - it was 3 at Providence in RI ! - 3 at the Cap Centre in the MD ! ... 5 at MSG in NYC !! ... and 3 at the Spectrum in Philly. And this " Massive !!! " Show represents the Middle-Night of the Dead-run at the Good Ol' Garden ! And, my goodness ... did they Bring-It !! The Dead played 52-Shows ! at M.S.G. dating back to the Winter of 1979 ( 1/7/79 > 10/19/94 ) - and, I have to be completely-honest here ... you would be hard-pressed to legitimately name 3 to 5 of these Shows that were truly " Historic " in nature, as in so-many cases ... the Cap Centre & The Spectrum stole-away a lot of those. I've sincerely studied this ' hard ' over the decades, always trying to find the " Diamond In The Rough " M.S.G. Show - but, really ... to no significant avail. And, yes ... I have listened to all 52. But ... it's just That ! that really-really makes this 9/18/87 Show So-Grate ! - is because it's not just ( ' arguably ' ) the Best-Show of this '87 MSG run, or the entire '87 Fall Tour ... it's the Best-Show of 1987 !!! And that my friends ... is a real-tough spot to earn, with the Band playing So-Hot ! - arguably much-more so then in Late-'86 or in 1988, as a general ' whole '. I mean ... This-Show is just a flat-out BURNER !!! - and whether the set list says it is, or not ( which, I think it does show ) ... but, regardless - it is True !!! And too ... let me even go a little bit ' Furthur ' here, and even slightly off this notion - regarding " 30 Trips ". The goal with the " 30 Trips " ( GD 50 ! ) box set release was to select a Show that essentially " represents it's ' Touring-Year ' with overall excellence ". Not, necessarily ' The-Best ' Show - but, a real-solid ( way-solid ) Show through & through that earns a two-thumbs-up for the Year it represents. And ... in my opinion ( though, quite possibly the minority opinion - likely ... ) - This ! 9/18/87 Show truly is ( pound-for-pound ) the " Best Show " of the Grateful Dead 1987 Touring-Year !!! Here were the others that were indeed real-close - but, not quite there .. .. .. 1972 ( 9/24/72 Waterbury, CT ) - but, you know ... it's 1972 ! we are talking about ?!? - right ?! ... 1979 ( 10/27/79 Cape Cod Coliseum - S. Yarmouth, MA ) -- well, you know ... if it wasn't for the Stanley Theatre ?! Let's just say that this-one is Real ! close - maybe even a ' tie ' ? ... 1985 ( 6/24/85 Riverbend - Cincy, OH ) - love it always, but it's still " Always " 6/30/85 MPP !!! ... 1988 ( 7/3/88 Oxford Plains, ME ? ) - a close-call again ... but, then again -- Meadowlands ? - Alpine ? - Greek ? - Cap Centre ? - Spectrum ? - kind of a toss-up, really & sincerely ... 1989 ( 10/26/89 Miami Arena, FL ) - Damn ! I Love-This-Show !! ( and was So-Thrilled !! it was ' Picked ' ) - but, the truth is ... " Warlocks " or not - This-One ( " The Best " ) - just ' Must ' come from the '89 Summer Tour, with RFK, JFK & Buffalo pretty much fighting over this Blue-Ribbon ... Ha ! So, my point here is Distinct ! -- as you really-could argue that this " 1987 " MSG NYC 9/18/87 Show is ( arguably ) ... ' The-Only ' Show from the " 30 Trips " box set release which is ... " The Best-Show from it's individual Touring-Year ! ". I mean, you know ... " opinions " and all of that, I get it - but, this one is indeed mine. And, I made this decision at a ( fairly-raging ) Party ! I played my analog tapes of 9/18/87 way-back in the Summer of 1989 !! I put on this Show - and a Bunch ! of intermediate-to-experiences Dead Fans wanted to listen to " This-Show " & " This-Show ! " - " Only !!! " ... All-Night-Long. And this is no-joke, as in fact - it was this exact ' popularity ' experience & experiment that actually had me seek out the ' Other ' 51 MSG Shows ! - over the next 6-Years !!
