The Grateful Dead ' Live ' at the Capitol Theatre - in Passaic, NJ ! - on the 1977 Spring Tour on the East Coast ! -- the ' Opening-Night ' of the Spring '77 Classic ! 3-Show run at the Capitol Theatre ... Lazy Lightning > Supplication ! - Scarlet > Fire !! - & Playin' In The Band !!! ... " Prime Era " 1977 Live-Dead !!!!! Grateful Dead Fans !!! Offered here is the " 1977 " CD Set ( Brand New ! ) from inside the Legendary ! Grateful Dead " 30 Trips Around The Sun " Box Set - released in 2015 in direct conjunction with the much anticipated " 50-Years ! Celebration of The Grateful Dead " ( 1965 - 2015 ) ... GD50 !!! And, to honor this Landmark ! Rock & Roll Achievement - Grateful Dead Productions / Rhino released a Limited Edition Box Set ( of 6,500 units ) - to rightfully ' Commemorate ' " '65 " ! And in unprecedented ( & So-Cool ! ) fashion ... this Monster Box Set included Thirty ( 30 ) Grateful Dead Shows on Thirty ( 30 ) CD Sets ( 80-CD's in total ) - and, each CD Set represents the sequential years of the Band's 30-Year development ... from 1966 to 1995 ! Obviously, this was a " Deadheads Dream " type Box Set - for the Beyond-Special occasion ... of 50-Years Upon Our Heads ! Fantastic, to say the least ... Wow !!! And, for the 30 Trips " 1977 " 2-CD Set selection offered here ... Whoa ?!!!! Where to start ? ... I mean Where ?? to start ?!? Well, let me first start by giving this 4/25/77 Capitol Theatre the ' rightful-defense ' it very-rightfully deserves. Ha ! Because let's be completely-honest, my fellow Dead Fans ... if each one of us had the chance ( & honor ! ) to select the " 1977 Show " for 30-Trips ? - would the Pressure surely be on ?! I mean who doesn't love '77 Dead - and at least during some-point in their Deadhead Career - hasn't referred to '77 as ' one-of ' their favorite Live-Dead years ... if not " The " All-Time Favorite Live-Dead year ?! I mean seriously ... as the only Dead Fans who haven't are those who " purely-swear-by " either Pigpen - or Brent. And, either are way valued-arguments to my ears - but, '77 ? ... it's just the Silky-Smooth ! ... the Fluid ! ... the Intense !! ... and the Unstoppable !!! And, to some - and arguably ' many ' - it's Unmatched ! As I think the only semi-legitimate knock I've ever really heard on '77 - is that there were only 5 " Dews " delivered ( none in the Fall Tour ) - and I mean, come-on ... really ? As though it is indeed true, it's still kind of splitting-hairs - unfairly. As heck, I'm just glad there there ' were ' 5-Dews !!!!! And too ... let's not forget - there were only 3 in '76 - 1 in '78 - 1 in '79 - and 4 in '80 ! So yeah ... that's my ' counter ' - '77 was pretty darn huge for Dews !! ... with " 5 ! ". Ha ! Well, you know - at least that was my answer to this ' particular ' '77 siege which I once did sustain ... & attempted to battle ! So, what do you say ... was I indeed ' Triumphant ' ?! Ha ! ... Classic. And, I'd really rather not get into any anti-Donna Jean discussions - personally ... as I love her, always have - and always will. And yes, a ' Dew ' did for sure grace this 3-Show Passaic, NJ stand at the Capitol - falling on the Final-Night of 4/27/77 ( aka. the FM Broadcast ! night ) ... so, there You-Go ' Big Apple ' ! And, for the defense of this Show ( like it really needs any ... ) ... the Deal ! just Scorches like a ball of Fire & Flame after the Minglewood opener !! Garcia follows suit with a Sweet ! T.L.E.O. & Peggy-O ... and then it is for-sure ' Weir-Time ' ! Just like that Good Ol' Lot-Sticker once did say ... " When Things Get Weir'd !! ". Well, right-here ... indeed they do >>> for a Lightning > Supplication ! - Estimated ! - and Music Never Stopped !! to blast 4 out of the final 6 First Set tunes ... and oh boy do Bobby & Billy get Jerry Jivin' !!! Pure ! Travis Bean TB-500 Grace !!!!! I mean after all people, come on ... because " The Enemy Is Listening !!! ". Ha ! Sure-is ... And really, this All ! sets the stage for the - ahhh ... pretty-much " Beyond " Massive ?!! --- Scarlet > Fire !!!!! I mean I well know Folks who favor those the likes of Lakeland - The Mosque - Cornell, etc. - but, let Me ! just say ... " you cannot keep a Grate ! Scarlet > Fire down " ! Now, if they would have also played it at Binghampton ? Then, it might be another story ? ( Ha ! ) ... but, that's a completely-different conversation ! So-Awesome ... as Jerry drives this one way-hard - it's indoor venue close encounter to the Fans G.D. Magic ! - and this is for sure one of those times - where the sheer Magic ! of the cohesiveness pretty-much completely spills into the ... Entire ! rest of Set II ! - starting right-away with the Samson !! - and Folks ... this is a Tuesday-Night ! ' Samson ' ... which is still sheer Muscle ! And then, it's just Pure ! ... Pure !! ... Pure !!! Grateful-Dead-Magic !!!!! - and, it goes just like this >>>>> Terrapin > Playin' > Drums > Wharf Rat > Playin' !!! With U.S. Blues ! as the Encore. And, back-tracking for just a quick-second ... just think of this, and try to put it into perspective -- if East Coast ( & New York ! ) Fans didn't catch the Philly Show ( just prior ) at the Spectrum on 4/22/77 ... then this was-indeed the Very-First ! " Terrapin " they ever saw Live !!! And, much-less ( or, Much-More ! ) ... it was This-One !!! Just simply huge ... And too, what I also find so-cool about this 4/25/77 Passaic Show is that it was the 1st Night of a 3-Show stand for the New Jersey / New York Mid-Atlantic & Northeast Deadhead Faithful ... and what was likely approached by the Band as a warm-up starter night - for a NY Radio Broadcasted Show in 2-Days -- ended up being close to Fully ! Enchanted with G.D. Live-Magic !!! So, yeah ... picking " '77 " was for sure a pretty heavy-duty job, but - somebody had to do it. For, if it was I ? Oh geez ... I don't know ? ... since 5/19/77 Atlanta & 5/15/77 St. Louis & 5/22/77 Pembroke Pines & 11/5/77 Rochester & Winterland '77 ( & May '77 ) have already been ' Picked ' ? ... and yes - so have New Haven / Boston / Ithaca / Buffalo ( by now ) ... hmmmm ... maybe I'd go with 2/26/77 Swing ? -- 5/26/77 Baltimore ? -- 10/2/77 P-Town ? -- 11/1/77 Cobo ? -- 10/12/77 Manor Downs ?! Nahhh ... gotta be totally-honest = 11/6/77 !!!!! It's " Too Late For Me " now though ... Thankfully !!! - since as-of January 2018 ... the Deadhead World will now Forever know This-One as " Dave's Picks 25 ". To my ears ... " The-Best !!! " Show from All ! of 1977. Though yes, we all have ... Opinions ! But, I cannot tell a lie ... as 4/25/77 Capitol Theatre just isn't too-far behind in this '77 Run For The Roses !! It's sheer Grateful Dead Live-Magic ! - representing '77 ! right-here -- and now the G.D. " 50 " 30-Trips ' Honor ' for '77 !! -- which, quite honestly ... it's already been doing for over 40-Years ! now ... and is for-sure So ! " Well-Worthy " !!! So yeah, Nice-Pick ! ... Friends of Dick !! As I'd have to guess that he'd be totally-game for This ! '77 " 30-Trips Pick !!! ". Excellent !!! ... Enjoy !!!!!
