And in unprecedented ( & So-Cool ! ) fashion ... this Monster Box Set included Thirty ( 30 ) Grateful Dead Shows on Thirty ( 30 ) CD Sets ( 80-CD's in total ) - and, each CD Set represents the sequential years of the Band's 30-Year development ... from 1966 to 1995 ! Obviously, this was a " Deadheads Dream ! " type Box Set - for the Beyond-Special occasion ... of 50-Years Upon Our Heads ! Fantastic, to say the least ... Wow !!! And, for " This ! " 30 Trips " 1984 " 3-CD Set selection offered here ... One of only 3-Shows ' Ever ' played by the Band in Augusta, Maine ! ( the ' Last-One ' ever ). And, for that matter too - this is also one-of the only 16-Shows ever played by the Dead - in " Maine ! ". Which, is indeed kind of even an ' inside-joke ' for many of us that have taped and/or tape-traded real-hard over the past decade(s) - because for whatever reason it might just have been ... the Grateful Dead always tended ( way more-often, then not ) to pretty-much " Smoke !! " their " Maine-Show ! ". Most likely due to the Fan-Love to & from the loyal Northeast Hot-Bed of Deadheads in the '70's & '80's Era - and also since nearly-all of the Venues played were smaller, and in many cases " Intimate " - in comparison to many other Tour-Venues of the time, back east. And, of all of the " Maine-Dead " recorded ... it's arguably " This-Show ! " which delivered the Best-Dead of its time, era & Tour ! - as many consider This-Show ! to truly be the " Best-Show ! " of the entire 1984 Fall Tour ... while some also contend that it is indeed the " Best Show ' of ' 1984 ! " for the Good Ol' 1980's ! Grateful Dead !! I mean ... it's a real-tough-call - if you " Love !! " your '80's Dead like say ... I-Do ! And, there are literally a " Ton " of Shows that I would have liked to have seen take the " 1984 " 30-Trips ' Spot '. Dang, I mean ... say ' any ' of the Spring Tour Opening " Marin " Shows !?! - one of the two ' Hamptons ' ?? - one-of my Personal-Favorites ! = 4/17/84 Niagara Falls !!! ( Help > Slip ! > Franklin's !! ) - maybe one-of the Philly " Civic " Show(s) - where the Band actually did-not play The Spectrum ?! - like ' Any ' of the 3-Shows " Dressed To The Hilt ! - At The Hult !! " ( in Good Ol' Bluegene ! ) - ' Either ' of those-two " Trippy ! " Cal Expos ! ( the ' First ! ' 2-Shows at Expo ! ) - what about the Red Rocks !!? ... say Night #3 !? - or, dang ... Either-Show ! - at the MPP !!! ( Pure-Dead-Heat ! ... " Gar~cia !! " ) - Alpine Valley x 2 ?? - Dark Star !! at The Greek !!! - Ventura - Night #2 ?! - or Whoa !?! ... ' Either ' of the Hartford-Civic Heater(s) !! - 10/17/84 in Jersey !?! - or, last but Most-Definitely ! Not-Least !! ... pretty-much " Any & All ! " of the '84 Halloween-Run B.C.T. Shows !!!!! - with, the 11/2/84 & 11/3/84 Night(s) being specifically-in-mind from me ! ( G.L.O.R.I.A. !! ). But, with all of this said ... I still-do ( sincerely ) " Get-It " on the wisdom of this " 1984 " Augusta, Maine " Pick " - I honestly-do. And, if my mind serves me ' correctly ? ' - I'm also pretty sure that Phil-Himself ! referenced This ! 10/12/84 Augusta Show ( the 2nd Show of the 2-Shows ) as being " Extra-Special " ... in direct-reference to Brent's raw " Emotion " ( and Excellent ! live-delivery musically & vocally ) on ' Don't Need Love ' ... with Garcia being affected too - to the point that he steers-off the Playin' call from Weir - and just ' properly ' delivers a Beautiful ! ' Uncle John's ' - which, this situation so-eloquently called for. I mean ... This-Show ! is HOT !! And, the night before in Augusta ( on 10/11/84 ) the Boys really Lit-Up ! the Playin' !! - but, all other things considered ... they were saving it for 10/12/84 !! And, dang ... my-goodness did they ever do it. Far-far more than a ' Solid ' Show ... as this my fellow Dead Fans - it's a " Special ! " Dead Show !! WOW. Stranger ! Hot !! & right out of the gate - with a mellow ' Roses ' to follow. But then - it's straight to kick-down-time ! ... in the form of not only ' On The Road Again ! ' - but also ' Jack A Roe ! ' - " Both !! " Pure-Live-Dead " Rarities " here at this point in the Fall of '84 - and well-played too, may I add. All Over Now was next, with a Burnin' ! Cumberland to follow ... with Music Never Stopped !! as the Set I closer. A " Set I " So-Hot at the time ... that you might as well just stay right in your seat !! And, as for " Set II " - Cold Rain to open ... with a Weir-Fired ! Sailor > Saint to follow - and then ... the ' Don't Need Love ' delivered by Brent ! which quickly became the ' Talk-Of-This-Fall-Tour ! '. With, naturally ... Jerry just " All-Over ! " the lead-pockets ! ... ' tightly !! '. Then, steering this Dead-Ship ' appropriately ' into Uncle John's ! - which, Garcia also proceeds to just " Burn !! ". And, after tapering-off into Drums > Space ... it's then time for the " Return " of Last-Night's Playin' ! - in the form of a " Reprise ! " - which, was a big-deal at the time for the Boys to pull this Rabbit out of the Hat ! And, I'd have to ' check ? ' on-it - but, I'm pretty sure it might have just been the " First !?! ". Heck yeah ... the " Playin' Reprise !!! " - which, we all learned to love & look-for during " Twenty Years So Far ! " and beyond from here ... through the end in 1995 ! And then ... just as Playin' begins to drop-tempo ... Jerry-Again ! - as he ' re-delivers ' the Uncle John's !! And nope, he's not-done either Fans ... as Here-Comes " The Dew !!! ". A flat-out " Heater ! " for '84 - and then Bobby just pulls the trigger ' after ' for the Encore !! And yeah ... it was indeed the ' right ' trigger for this " Magical !! " 1984 Live-Dead Night in Augusta, Maine ! ... " Good Lovin' !!! ". Geeez ... as I'm not really sure what-else to even say about this-one - other than the obvious ... which is - put This ! in your Live-Dead " Collection " and it Will-Be ! one that you will be constantly grabbing-for ! - and literally being anxious to Hear !
