Grateful Dead : Dick's Picks 5 Volume Five : December 26, 1979 ( 12/26/1979 ) - Oakland Auditorium Arena - Oakland, California ( CA ) : 1996 (1979/1996/2000's) Grateful Dead Records / Grateful Dead Merchandising, Inc. ( GDR / GDM ) - GDCD 4024 - Early 2000's GDM Issue : Very-Rare ! The G.D. Kicking-Off ! the Pre " Go To Heaven ! " Era !! with a Five-Night 1979 - 1980 New Years Eve Run " Home Turf ! " style in the Bay Area !! ... 12/26/79 Oakland !!! = " Dick's Picks # 5 !!!!! ". G rateful Dead Fans !!! No-better of a place to " Go To Heaven ! " than in Oakland ! at the Kaiser !! - or the " Henry J. ! " as many Deadheads also liked to call it in later years. Back in 1979 it was plainly referred to as the ' Oakland Auditorium Arena ' - yet there was nothing plain or bland about this Magical ! music space. It fact, this fine Venue was basically replacing the Bay Area's Winterland Arena ( through no fault of its own - just simply time & age ), and it became the true California " indoor arena " Birthplace of the " Brent Era " ! Only seven months into the Band at this point, this was the ' new guy ' Brent's 1st Winter Tour with the Band - and it was only his 2nd stand in Oakland. The 1st run in August was only 2 nights, but this one was for Five !! And five very-juicy ones at that. Playing in front of the hometown crowd obviously always meant a lot, but through the music during this run you can certainly sense a true fondness for the intimacy of this fine venue. Its space at 7,900 ( about 1/2 the size of a Hockey-Rink Venue ) was just-right for this new period in the Band's current-time evolution, and the acoustics inside were almost " hollowly-perfect " for a relatively small indoor arena. If you've been to the Kaiser, and have been fairly close the the front - you can clearly hear how well the musicians hear the stage monitors, each others - yet the crowd is still truly stage front because the stage corner spacing is a perfect size. Plus there are no nose bleeds here, as the high-up seats were as close to cozy as the down-low seats on the floor. The Winterland ( and Bill ! ) should have been real proud that the Dead were still in good-hands when it came to settled-in / multi-night runs, just like this Historic ! '79 one : 5 Shows in 6 Days, including " New Years Eve " ! And Musically ... you are in for a fine ( & Huge ! ) G.D. Treat throughout all 3-Discs of this Fabulous ! Dick's Picks !! This is an Awesome ! recording done by Betty, and the encapsulation of the percussion sounds make everything thing else that happens soothe in like gravy ! The mood is mellow at the start of this run, but it gives the band a platform to get & stay loose - and my goodness do they run with it ! Garcia's new mastery of his MXR Dist. + pedal makes for a nastier, grittier sound with an edge & moody attitude when he so chooses it -- and when the Mutron Envelope Filter gets stomped, it does its job each & every time with a Gusto ! After all Dead Fans, this is our beloved Shakedown ! Era we are speaking of !! The work on Uncle Johns Band ( split-spot ) is just legendary Rock 'n Roll stuff. But the Real-Mustard on top of this Kaiser ! Roll ! happens in two distinct places : First, where the Liner Notes say " Track 3 Jam " -- well what this really is is an incredible twist & turn jam that touches heavily ( basically is ) " Caution " - where Phil even pushes towards a parallel jam touching on ( what sounds to me ) as Santana / McLaughlin's " A Love Supreme ! " - but just faintly, yet very cool. This Caution push is probably close ( but shorter ) than the 12/1/79 Pittsburgh beast of a jam they created 1-month prior. But above all else, listening to Phil & Jerry battle out the Other One is downright phenomenal listening. I would maybe call it a ' Headphones-Only ' moment. Funniest thing is, that to this day I think Phil might have just actually won this dual ??! Though Jerry's playing is lightning-fast & gamey, Phil settles the score by dropping a secondary Bomb out of the new & fancy Irwin Bass to counter Garcia & the Wolf ! This release is Simply-Awesome ! - and is indeed a " Must-Have ! " for any serious Grateful Dead Fan. I just Totally-Love ! this Era for the Band ! - and I'm quite certain you will too !! Enjoy !!!!!
