Grateful Dead : Dick's Picks 10 Volume Ten : December 29, 1977 ( 12/29/1977 ) Winterland Arena - San Francisco, California ( CA ) + December 30, 1977 ( 12/30/1977 - Winterland ) : 3 CD : 1998 (1977/1998) Grateful Dead Records / Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. ( GDR / GDP ) - GDCD 4030 : ' Original ! ' First ( 1st ! ) Printing ! ... Very-Rare !!! Night Two ( 2 ) of the 4-Night " Farewell to 1977 Dead ! " run at the Winterland Arena ( where else !? ) !!! Fabulous !! '77 Live-Dead !!!!! Growing up ( .... in the analog days ), I always mentally viewed this 1977 New Years Eve run as a sort of Farewell ! & Celebration !! to what is arguably the Band's greatest year -- from a standpoint of quality performances, and also from the standpoint of touring a darn-good studio album in Terrapin Station. From the very 1st '77 Tour opener at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino ( 2/26/77 ), you could tell that this band line-up had solidified, and they were really on to something. I would have loved to have seen the faces of the fans from the stage, as the band did -- right in the thick of them launching into the beautiful & musically complex " Terrapin Station " for its inaugural-appearance in a live Dead Set. Mmmm ... Heck, there were probably even mixed-reviews - as rumor has it that some of us Deadheads don't like change !? Ha ! But the incredible West Coast / East Coast Spring Tour run, led on to what is simply one of " Rock & Roll's " Greatest Tours of All-Time : Summer Tour 1977 !!! As we know, in early & mid-May the Band takes the fans straight to the Moon ! Well, enough on that ... but then it just won't stop - & the train kept-on-a-running, I mean What ??! -- 11/06/77 Binghamton ? Probably " The " example as far as the Fall Tour on the East Coast goes. Then this run to settle down the Winter Tour in the Bay Area at the cozy Winterland, and call it a year. Maybe the Band's best year ? Just maybe ? To my ear, Dick hit the head on the nail ( oops, visa-versa - or something like that ! ) when he chose this 12/29/77 Show from this absolutely great 4-night run. Don't forget, this was released way back in 1998, but it was only the 2nd head-first dive into '77 material, with DP #3 being the initial taste for the tone hungry fans. Set One offers the ideal array ( even order ! ) of '77 material with maybe Jack Straw - Loser - or maybe even Sugaree taking the cake. Smooth, that's what 1977 G.D. is, it's " Smooth ! ". But, if Set One took the cake, then Set Two clearly takes it away and chows it down !! A Rockin' ! Bertha > Good Lovin' to launch the groove & set the mood. But then a spacy ( and at times upbeat / aggressive ) Playin' in the Band leads to one of one of my personal favorite live moments of '77 ( and rest assured, there are many indeed ) . . . the China Cat > Rider > China Doll > Playin' Jam into Drums .... Holy Fender-Twin Reverb !!?!!! Jerry, naturally ... Disc 3 also has four ( 4 ) tracks from the very next night ( 12/30/77 ), which is great too because you can get a real nice feel of how the band measures up / compares, and can even get exact early insight on what New Years Eve 1977-78 might have in store. Fare Thee Well " '77 " our Grate ! Friend !!! Enjoy !!!!!
