Description

Grateful Dead : Dick's Picks 2 Volume Two : October 31, 1971 ( 10/31/1971 ) - Ohio Theatre - Columbus, Ohio ( OH ) : 1 CD : 1995 (1971/1995) Grateful Dead Records / GDM, Inc. - ( GDCD 4019 ) : Brand New / Factory-Sealed ! : Halloween 1971 ' Live-Dead ' !!! : Very Rare ! Halloween Night 1971 !!! ... The Grateful Dead - at the Ohio Theatre ... in Columbus, Ohio !!!!! Hey Deadheads, how about this for a " Trick-or-Treat !!! " ... over 50-Years-Ago !!?! My oh my, does the Band sure bring some Spooky! musical-excellence to this Historic ! Halloween '71 Show !!! I might as well start with what is obviously a very key ingredient with this one -- it was recorded by roadie Rex Jackson & what an Amazing-Job ! he did. There have been a lot of groundbreaking Grateful Dead Live Music recordings by Rex ( Jackson ) & Betty ( Cantor-Jackson ) both, and this is a fine example of the reason for their popularity among Deadheads. A recording nothing-short of Amazing ! I'm glad for those of you that attended this one... Wow! - but for those of us who didn't ( or maybe weren't even born yet ), I'm always curious of the specifics of why some recordings are just top-echelon. I guess some of it was how the Dead played on this night, with the room/space of the venue obviously having a lot to do with it, mike/monitor/sbd set up, attention to dialing ( all ) the equipment, mixing-board & just every single dial right. It's a lot to ponder, indeed. And the product speaks for itself. To my ear, the volume balance/levels, vocal-mix, instrument-mix ( especially treble-highs ), and even the percussion mix ( high-hat ) are a perfect mix. Musician wise, everybody just melds together perfectly ! And in general, this isn't my usual personal opinion about '71 either ! For this release you obviously cannot really argue with what was included: Darkstar > Jam > Sugar Mag. > NFA > GDTRFB > NFA. I mean, in a nutshell -- What a Smoldering~Chunk ! of Early/Prime !! - Grateful Dead !!! Some of the Fall '71 " Jerry - Bobby - Phil - Bill - Keith " Unit Live-Dead here too ! - interestingly ( as-always ! for This ! short, but Sweet !! ... " Grateful Dead ! "). But, here's what I find humorous, I still don't know the answer to - and probably never really will know why . . . Why just ' One ( 1 ) ' CD in this release guys ?? This was only the 2nd release way back in 1995, to follow the initial two " Vault " releases - so I wonder if this was perhaps the initial direction ( some 1, 2, 3, 4 & 6 disc releases ? ) -- or I wonder if that was all the tape that was there ? -- or if perhaps the remaining sections of the other reels were not releasable ( quite-likely ) ? -- heck, was this actually a 1-disc pricing/marketing strategy ?? ( nah ... ) --- OR, was this 1-Disc chunk of Epic Grateful Dead just so Incredibly-Hot ! & recorded so Perfectly ! - that it simply served as a walk-off home-run to & for the Fans ??! Well, that there is the answer that I'm going with Folks. Give this one a try, if you still haven't - and get it in your Collection - for goodness sakes ... No our Love will Not Fade Away !!! Enjoy !!!!!
