A period that could be very easily argued as the 1st " True " Prime of the Good Ol' Grateful Dead ! Something special, to say the very-least. Down & Dirty, and Heavy-Duty ! G.D., yet - at the same time ... they can get so incredibly sweet & subtle too, whenever they want. The Rock & Roll Psychedelic Era in full effect, with a Live-Band that can read the minds of their crowd like truly no other ' Band ' at the time. Just think ... as this is right around the time that Led Zeppelin began to really hit it big-time, and Hendrix was headed into what was arguably his prime ' quarter ' in the Spring of '69 ! This is a young Grateful Dead indeed ... only what, say 4-years into even being a band ? And, when you really think that over ... that alone makes this release all the more impressive. Plus, because Warner Brothers was heavily involved at this point - the recording equipment console that was used ... was Ultra ! state-of-the art audio recording equipment. And, as far as this Late '68 / Early '69 Grateful Dead period goes ... the recordings from this Fillmore West run, are really tough to top -- and, as are the Performances ! This CD set was released in 2005 by GDP / Rhino - and, at the same time ... there was also a 10-Disc Box Set released ! -- hence, the " Complete Recordings " version. So obviously, that is the set to have - for the ' completists ' - however ... what really impressed me about this 3-CD Set version - is the ' Selections ' included !!! I mean - Wow !!! Let's put it this way, if I was selected to pick the material from this run for a " 3-CD Set " release, and I was blindfolded & not in the know ... I'm not sure that my selections would vary much at all ! In some ways, this set is kind of the " Best of the Best " of this run ... which, it really should be. Check out the photos too, as this is a very-nicely done set - in not only a Hardcover bound Book style ... but, there is also a 70-Page !!! Book attached on the inside ! With some, no doubt ...
