Pretty much, ' Wow ! ' ... as that's about all I could think when I first got my hands on this Magnificent ! release when it came out, way-back in 2007. I'm kind of embarrassed to say that until I purchased this 3-Disc Set, I realized that I had only heard less than 2/3rds ( approximately ... ) of this material offered in my cherished & very-carefully preserved analog cassette tape racks ! And, I was also never able to get extremely crispy / clean low gen. versions of these analogs, so mine weren't crystal - thus not getting the spin time, they now obviously deserved. After I got this Set, it actually just sat around for a week or so before I actually had time to sit down & give it the " complete " uninterrupted listen it rightfully deserved ( as ' non-immediate ' play of any new Grateful Dead release is indeed quite a rarity in this household ! ) -- then one day, when I had some free time I popped it in ... and Whoa !!! -- " When Phil's On The Band's On !!!!! ". After I listened to this in entirety, I played it Again ! in entirety the very-next day - because it was just that-good, or at least to my set of Dead Fan ears. I usually never do that, because there is so much ' other ' worthy music to get to that is just sitting there & waiting ! - and, especially here today, in this sometimes overwhelming digital-age. But my goodness ... the musical tones & creative versions / transitions fully-demonstrate that the Band was simply thrilled ! to be back & rip-roaring after the Late '74 / '75 hiatus, and this is actually probably one of the Very-Best ! New Year's Eve Performances ' Ever ' by the Grateful Dead !!! My focus always seemed to be on the Spring through Fall / Winter Tour in 1977 ( arguably at their Very-Best ! ), but there is some real noteworthy freshness & creativity to this Show that shines before their set lists did get a little bit ' settled-into ' deeper into '77 - which is really the only worthy criticism of this magical G.D. period that I have ever heard discussed ( i.e. only 3 Morning Dews played in 1977, etc. ). My personal recommendation is to most-definitely acquire this set ... and with all Dead Fan seriousness -- as you most likely " Need " this one in your personal G.D. Fan Vault ! I mean imagine that ... the Grateful Dead 1976-1977 New Year's Eve Show is a " Must-Have " !?!! Dang, you bet it is ... and then some! A Truly-Stellar ! release, all through & through & through !!!
