Known as Parson Brownlow he was a methodist minister , newspaper publisher , book author , prisoner of war and politician. He was the 17th governor of Tennessee from 1865 to 1869 and US senator from Tennessee from 1869 to 1875. He was well-known for his vicious verbal debates responding to rival missionaries of other sectarian Christian beliefs. Soon after the Civil War Brownlow and other Republicans utilized their control of state government to enfranchise male African American former slaves with the right to vote and run for public office in Tennessee and extend other civil rights to all former slaves. This book was published in 1856 by the author. 331 pages. Authors signature under his picture. Close ups of this in the last 2 photos. The hardback book has wear to the cover and spine. There is a lot of foxing all throughout the book. Binding is good. The previous owners name and some more writing is is in the front. Comes from smoke free home. No mustiness.
