Description

This is a 1977 ABC Records reissue (AB-67016) of an original 1971 German recording from SEON Musikfilm: Stücke für eine Flötenuhr (Pieces for Flute-Clock) , a series of works for the flute-clock, an early "mechanical instrument" similar to a pianola or music box, where the composition was played by the machine rather than by a musician. Liner notes indicate that flute-clocks were popular from around 1750 to 1820 or 1830, and this album presents works for that instrument by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Danzi. The compositions have been transcribed for woodwinds (the recordings are not of an actual flute-clock), played by the Danzi-Quintett: Frans Vester (flute), Maarten Karres (oboe), Piet Honingh (clarinet), Adriaan van Woudenberg (horn) and Brian Pollard (bassoon). Extensive liner notes by Conrad L. Osborne are contained on a large (album-sized) insert sheet. As found, the insert had been folded in half (Photos 3 & 4), but is otherwise in good condition. The album has a small cutout near the upper right corner (Photo 1), and also shows a small collection index sticker in the upper right corner of the back. (Photo 2) Also included is a photocopy of the original album review from the October 1978 edition of The Gramophone. This is one of many titles from an extensive collection of classical LPs and CDs that we will be listing here. All have been carefully stored for many years, played only on premium equipment, and show little to no wear. NOTES: Album sleeves may have a small index sticker, usually in the upper right corner of the back, which was applied when the album was first purchased for this private collection.
