Description

Historic Tales of the Oregon Coast by Gary Hayes; A Book from History Press. The region was the site of historic global exploration and the epicenter of early international trade before becoming part of the United States following the great western migration that resulted in the devastating decline of the Native People and virtual elimination of their culture and way of life. This book tells the story of 200 transformative years as the Oregon Coast went from an unknown spot on the world map to become one of America's greatest natural treasures. The region was the site of historic global exploration and the epicenter of early international trade before becoming part of the United States following the great western migration that resulted in the devastating decline of the Native People and virtual elimination of their culture and way of life. Colorful eras of logging and fishing drove the region's economy from its pioneering beginnings into the twentieth century; and as the Oregon Coast became more accessible with the coming of steamboats, railroads and automobiles; remarkable preservation efforts assured unprecedented public access and the eventual protection of one America's greatest scenic wonderlands. This book is richly illustrated with historical photos. Author Gary Hayes is a native Oregonian with lifelong connections to the Oregon Coast. Gary founded the publishing company Explorer Media Group, where he published Coast Explorer Magazine for more than twenty years, featuring his writing and photography. His extensive knowledge of the Oregon Coast led him to being named the Oregon Coast expert for the state’s tourism organization, Travel Oregon. He currently lives in Cannon Beach, Oregon, with his wife, Anna, and dog, Gracie. Author-signed copies available upon request.
