The novel follows Conan's desperate quest to recover the Heart of Ahriman — the jewel that can defeat Xaltotun — as he travels across the Hyborian Age world, encountering pirates, sorcerers, and the full scope of Howard's invented mythology. This 1977 hardcover edition, published under copyright to Glenn Lord (Howard's literary estate manager), reproduces the complete original text with a Hyborian Age map drawn by John Mayer after Howard's own sketches. Robert E. Howard & the Conan Canon Robert E. Howard (1906–1936) created Conan the Barbarian for Weird Tales magazine, writing 21 stories featuring the character between 1932 and 1936. The Hour of the Dragon — his only Conan novel — was written specifically for the British market in 1934–35 and first published in Weird Tales. Howard's death at 30 in 1936 left the Conan canon to be managed by Glenn Lord, his literary agent's successor, who controlled and licensed the original Howard texts.
