In 1951, Doubleday asked Asimov to write juvenile science fiction novels that could become a TV series — a "Space Ranger" version of The Lone Ranger. Fearing the show would be "uniformly awful" and damage his reputation, Asimov published under "Paul French" (inspired by Cornell Woolrich's pen name "William Irish"). When the TV series fell through — partly because Rocky Jones, Space Ranger beat them to air — Asimov stopped hiding his identity. He later added the Three Laws of Robotics to the series, calling it "a dead giveaway to Paul French's identity for even the most casual reader." Asimov named the protagonist "David" after his then-unborn son, but felt the name "lacked vigor" for a space adventure hero. He added the nickname "Lucky" for subsequent titles.
