La Jolle, CALIFORNIA - Torrey Pines Lodge - Coast Highway: La Jolla, a picturesque, upscale seaside community in San Diego, California, is renowned for its dramatic coastline, upscale village shopping, and celebrated marine life. Located just 15 miles north of Downtown San Diego, "The Jewel" is home to roughly 32,000 residents, world-class research institutions, and some of the country's top-rated beaches. The Historic Torrey Pines Lodge (State Natural Reserve) - Origins: Completed in February 1923, this adobe building was funded by La Jolla philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps and designed by architect Richard Requa. - Design: Styled after Hopi Indian pueblos in the Arizona desert, it was built using plaster-clad adobe walls, pole ladders, and other Pueblo Revival features. - Purpose: It originally served as a popular roadside restaurant and rest stop for travelers making the rugged drive between Los Angeles and San Diego. - Preservation: The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
