En 1814, la Restauration met fin sa carrière et il retourne à Milan où il se consacre à ses passions (théâtre, concerts, musées, etc). De retour à Paris en 1821, il fréquente de nombreux salons romantiques. En 1830, Stendhal est nommé consul à Trieste; c'est aussi cette année que paraît Le Rouge et le Noir. Stendhal entreprend la rédaction de Lucien Leuwen (qu'il ne terminera pas) et de La Vie de Henry Brulard. Stendhal meurt en 1842.
