A playful and auspicious piece said to bring good fortune Okiagari Lucky Cat — Handmade Folk Craft Doll from Iwate, Japan This charming okiagari (self-righting) doll is a traditional folk craft from Kanegasaki, Iwate. It is created by Sawahan Studio, the second-generation artisan of the historic Rokkaku Hariko tradition. After the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the artisan began making these dolls with the heartfelt wish: “May we rise again from hardship.” Each piece is made using a unique ura-hari (reverse-layering) hariko technique, in which hand-made Japanese paper is applied from the inside of the mold instead of the outside. No pigment coating is applied, allowing the warm, natural texture of the paper to remain visible. The paper used is Narushima Washi, known as one of the northernmost traditional washi papers in Japan. The weight inside comes from clay soil of Kokujiyaki pottery in Kuji City, giving the doll its gentle rocking motion. When softly tipped, it rolls with a quiet korokoro… and stands back up — a small symbol of resilience and good fortune. Each face is hand-painted, full of character and charm. Compact in size, it sits beautifully on an entryway shelf, desk, or display corner without taking up space. ⸻ 📐 Size Height: approx. 7.5 cm Width: approx. 4.8 cm Depth: approx. 4.8 cm Palm-size / lightweight ⸻ 🖐 Materials & Technique • Narushima handmade washi paper (Iwate, Japan) • Ura-hari hariko technique • Kokujiyaki clay weight • Hand-painted, one-of-a-kind ⸻ ⚠ Care Please gently dust with a dry cloth.
