Conceived as a fusion of rock and orchestral music, the album was recorded with the London Festival Orchestra conducted by Peter Knight, and engineered by Derek Varnals using Decca's Deramic Sound System. MOODY BLUES Days of Future Passed 1967 Deram DES-18012 STERLING BW White Satin EX Days of Future Passed is the second studio album by the Moody Blues, released in November 1967 on Deram Records. It marked a decisive turning point for the band — their first record with guitarist and vocalist Justin Hayward and bassist John Lodge, and the first to feature Mike Pinder's Mellotron. Conceived as a fusion of rock and orchestral music, the album was recorded with the London Festival Orchestra conducted by Peter Knight, and engineered by Derek Varnals using Decca's Deramic Sound System. The album unfolds as a single continuous piece tracing the arc of a day — from dawn through night — with spoken poetry connecting each movement. Side One opens with "The Day Begins," moves through "Dawn Is a Feeling," "Another Morning," and "Peak Hour." Side Two carries "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)," "Twilight Time," and closes with "Nights in White Satin," one of the most enduring songs in British rock. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has cited the album as one of the earliest examples of progressive rock and one of rock music's first true concept albums. This is a US pressing on Deram Records (DES-18012), red and white label, correct for the original US issue. Distributed through London Records Inc. The lacquer on both sides was cut at STERLING Sound, New York — confirmed by the STERLING stamp in the deadwax on both sides. STERLING Sound was founded in New York City in the late 1960s and went on to become one of the most significant mastering facilities in American recording history. Most documented US pressings of this title carry Bell Sound cutting; a STERLING-cut copy is the less commonly encountered variant. Pressed at Bestway.
