Mission Santa Clara de Asis is a Spanish mission founded by the Franciscan order in the present-day city of Santa Clara, California. The mission, which was the 8th in California, was founded in 1777. Named for Saint Clara of Assisi, who founded the order of the Poor Clares and was an early companion of Saint Francis of Assisi, this was the 1st California to be named in honor of a woman.
