Description

This massive 1972 British import double LP boxed set from the London ffrr ("Full Frequency Range Recording") label of London Records (OSA-1290) presents a performance of The Fairy Queen by Henry Purcell. Featured performers include Jennifer Vyvyan (1st Soprano), Mary Wells (2nd Soprano), Norma Burrowes (3rd Soprano), Alfreda Hodgson (Mezzo-Soprano), James Bowman (1st Counter-Tenor), Charles Brett (2nd Counter-Tenor), Peter Pears (1st Tenor), Ian Partridge (2nd Tenor), Owen Brannigan (1st Bass) and John Shirley-Quirk (2nd Bass). They are accompanied by the Ambrosia Opera Chorus (Kenneth Sillito, Leader) and the English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Benjamin Britten and featuring Philip Ledger (Harpsichord Continuo), Kenneth Heath (Cello Continuo), Martin Gatt (Bassoon) and Peter Graeme (Solo Oboe). Album notes are in English by Imogen Holst, and are part of a large (album-sized) 16-page booklet discussing the opera, composer, lyrics and performance. Also included is a 3-page foldout catalog of other titles in the London ffrr series. The outer box is in excellent condition, and both front and back covers have no corner splits or other damage. We noticed during photography that the box lid was probably originally hinged on its left side, but the wraparound binding (with the stamped spine titles) appears to have been very precisely sliced down the back edge to cleanly separate the lid from the base. The inside of the top lid has a small pencil notation at the lower left. (Photo 3) The outer box shows a small collection index sticker in the upper right corner of the back . (Photo 2) This is one of many titles from an extensive collection of classical LPs and CDs that we will be listing here. All have been carefully stored for many years, played only on premium equipment, and show little to no wear. NOTES: Album sleeves may have a small index sticker, usually in the upper right corner of the back, which was applied when the album was first purchased for this private collection.
