There are no age spots on the Santeros white face, clothes or wood carvings, but some sporadic light spots on the white border (See photos). Back of the paper has browned over time (See photos). "El Santero," silkscreen was designed by Rafael Tufi~no to promote a movie commissioned by Puerto Rico's Department of Community Education (DIVEDCO) about 96-year-old Don Zoilo Cajigas Sotomayor, a carver of wooden saints from Aguada, Puerto Rico. He couldn't sell his carvings because industrialization had blanketed the island with religious statues made of plaster. Cajigas eventually sells his works to a man who works for a museum. BIOGRAPHY: Rafael Tufi~no (1922-2008) was a draftsman, graphic artist, muralist and illustrator and one of Puerto Rico's most prominent artists of his generation. Known for his excellence in printmaking, his art favored a figurative style. Together with artists Lorenzo Homar and graphic designer Irene Delano, he drew the famous "Plenas" portfolio in 1953. In 1954, he was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship and created "El Cafe," the first solo portfolio of a Puerto Rican artist. He became a member of the "Generacion del Cincuenta" (Fifties Generation), a group of young artists dedicated to forging an aesthetic identity for Puerto Rico. Born in Brooklyn, New York of Puerto Rican parents, Tufi~no returned to the island when he was 10 years old. There he found his lifelong inspiration painting daily life --- work, dance, music and festivals, as well as landscapes, interiors and portraits. He studied art in Puerto Rico and Mexico.
