From 1857, 4 years before the Civil War started, this is A Pictorial History of the United States, with Notices of Other Parts of America, by S.G. Goodrich, also known as Peter Parley. Published in Philadelphia by E.H. Butler & Co. Sized 8x5 inches, bound with leather at the spine, decorated boards, 360 pages, with ads at the rear. Profusely illustrated with maps and engravings. An inscription, looks like Emily L. or S. Francis, Academy, Conn., and a further pencil inscription from Wethersfield, Conn., in fine pencil calligraphy. Lots on the Indian Wars.
