Oof. It's somewhat scary for my tastes, but so are most of children books... Edition: the 1st edition of this book exists in 4 printings, main distinction being Oompa-Loompas. 5th printing in '73 underwent politically correct correction (pardon the pan) and Oompa-Loompas from Black became White Caucasian (see pictures 11 and 12 please) with corresponding changes in text. 1st printing:1964, red cloth boards, mustard end papers, publisher's info on the last page in 6 lines, including line "Paper manufactured by...", dust cover has no ISBN # on the rear panel, on the front panel there is a 1 inch white strip on top, if picture starts right on top of the front panel it's a Book club dust cover; 2nd printing: 1968, otherwise the same as 1st except that publisher info on the last page in 5 lines, no paper information, dust cover the same as 1st; 3rd printing: 1970-72, cream paper boards with brown cloth spine, green end papers, publisher info in 5 lines, same as 2nd printing, ISBN # on the bottom of dust cover rear panel; 4th printing: the same as 3rd but publisher info in 4 lines. This is correct 2nd, printed in '68. Condition: book is near fine with prev owner bookplate, otherwise clean and tight, no dirt or fingerprints. Dust cover correct, without ISBN #, priced. There is loss top right front panel and assorted very minor wear all around. Main DJ issue is liberal application of clear tape by some prev owner, mostly at front flap, which downgrades jacket so, let's say, good only. An uncommon book, most of the so-called "1st editions" on sale are later printings.
