He is best known for his large-scale, gestural paintings and his deep connection to Black Mountain College . Career, In the late 1950s, Rice served as a studio assistant to Mark Rothko . He also worked closely with Franz Kline and was a regular at the legendary Cedar Tavern in New York City, a hub for postwar artists. Style & Philosophy: Despite his association with Abstract Expressionism, Rice famously stated that painting was about "expressing the ineffable" rather than mere self-expression . Collections: His work is held in major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Wadswort.
