Seven Rivers by Vanessa Taylor Estimated delivery 3-12 business days Format Hardcover Condition Brand New Description "... history of the seven rivers representing the great natural arteries running through civilization, by virtue of the roles they have played in our shared and conflicted world history."--Provided by publisher. Publisher Description A magisterial history of the seven rivers representing the great natural arteries running through civilization, by virtue of the roles they have played in our shared and conflicted world history. Every river deserves its own history. The seven rivers in this narrative were chosen because they are major rivers that magnify the common qualities of these great natural arteries that run through civilization. The Nile, Danube, Niger, Mississippi, Ganges, Yangtze, and Thames are all "world rivers" by virtue of the roles they have each played in our shared and conflicted world history. They have served as the power bases for empires and have been fought over as frontiers. Their river basins--those great systems of tributaries and groundwater all flowing to the main river--have been plundered for their gold, timber, salt, oil, rubber, and their people. Vast networks have been forged between these rivers, such as the deadly "middle passage" of the slave trade linking the Congo and Mississippi basins. And rivers themselves have always had their own logic: their natural beauties, their floods, droughts, water-borne diseases, their tendency to silt up and mutate into marshland, their marshy subsidence below the cities of the unwary, their changes of course, tipping points and disappearances. These rivers have shaped our lives, just as we have shaped theirs. What follows is the story of humanity, in seven rivers. 1. Like new condition, safe packaging, good communication from seller. Fair price for the quality. Shipping was on time, but tracking information took over a week to receive. The book was as-described with minor cosmetic flaws (indentations in some pages, for example). I wish the listings showed the actual item being sold to you instead of just an accurate stock photo. This edition and appearance of George Orwell's 1984 here is a nice pocket-sized hardcover. I would buy from this shop again.

  2. The two new out-of-print books I ordered were exactly as described and shipped promptly. I did ask the seller's support person (an AI chatbot, I think) to be sure to package the items carefully, and "he" said that he'd make that request of the shipping department. I knew this was hooey, and as I expected, the books were shipped in nothing but a padded paper mailer, no other protection. I got lucky, no damage, but don't bother making special requests of this seller.

Very attentive to detail and responsive. Will buy from again!  Had a small issue with the item, but the seller resolved it quickly. Great customer service!  The seller went above and beyond to make sure I was happy with my purchase. Highly recommended!
