The Catalina Casino , completed in 1929 by chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. , became an instant icon with its circular Art Deco design, housing a grand ballroom and theater. Nearby stood the luxurious Hotel St. Catherine , a premier resort destination from 1918 until it was closed and demolished in 1966.
