Sunday Reading for the Young ; annual; unknown year and volume; publ. Wells, Gardner, Dalton, & Co.in the UK, Estes & Lauriat in the US; 498 pp; under covers of Chatterbox boards from 1892. Missing usual colored front-piece, table of contents. First page is black and white front-piece with series title followed by page two. Soiling and scuffing to boards, pages generally very good as are the hundreds of fabulous wood engravings (produced during the golden age of the medium, both in the UK and US). For many collectors, these illustrations are what is of primary value in these editions (see pics). Some of the notable illustrators include: G E Robertson, H J A Miles, Alfred Monro Smith, Helen Jane Arundel Miles, George John Pinwell, and engraver George Andrew Thomas Walker. This volume is a publishing oddity - a volume of Sunday Reading for the Young bound between boards from the 1892 edition of Chatterbox ! Both Chatterbox and Sunday were published by the same US and UK firms. Perhaps it was a binding mistake by the publisher. Or maybe a dealer covered the original Sunday boards with glued on skins from the 1892 boards of Chatterbox for marketing reasons.
