The Battle for Manila was fought from February 3 to March 3, 1945, during the Allied campaign to liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation in World War II. After U.S. forces landed on Luzon in January 1945, General Douglas MacArthur aimed to retake Manila, the Philippine capital. American troops, mainly from the U.S. Sixth Army, advanced rapidly toward the city. Although Japanese commander General Tomoyuki Yamashita had intended to avoid defending Manila, a large Japanese naval force under Rear Admiral Sanji Iwabuchi chose to hold the city. The battle became a brutal urban fight. U.S. forces entered Manila from the north while other American units moved in from the south, trapping Japanese defenders. Fighting was especially intense in the Intramuros district, government buildings, and along the Pasig River. Japanese troops committed widespread atrocities against civilians, and American artillery and combat operations caused massive destruction. By early March, organized Japanese resistance was crushed. Manila was liberated, but at a terrible cost: an estimated 100,000 Filipino civilians were killed, along with thousands of Japanese defenders and several thousand American casualties. Much of the city was left in ruins. The Battle for Manila was one of the most devastating urban battles of World War II and marked the end of Japanese control over the Philippine capital.
